Welcome to UAMMI

UAMMI is Utah's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Initiative. It brings together public, private, community, industry and education partners to assure growth and sustainability of Utah’s vibrant advanced material and manufacturing industry. Founded in 2014, and funded by the state of Utah, the mission of UAMMI is to be the think-tank and connector for Utah’s advanced materials industry.

We are just getting started and a new website and robust supply chain tool will be released soon! In the meantime, connect with us by joining our newsletter list and we'll keep you posted on all that's going on.

02 / UAMMI & Utah's Composite Industry

It all started during the space race of the 1950’s when two Utah based explosives companies, Hercules (now Hexcel) and Thiokol (now Orbital ATK), developed expertise to improve space rockets with carbon fiber.

This early beginning has expanded now to include well over 100 Utah businesses – ranging from startups to those well established- who deliver this very specialized and unique set of carbon composite skills and services that are found today in Utah.

Those early applications with rocket ships have now expanded to using carbon composites in a range of aerospace components, medical devices, industrial products, recreational products and other products containing advanced materials.

Utah’s supply chain and ecosystem has diversified as well to include manufacturing, material suppliers, and service-based companies performing sophisticated design and analysis.

The Supply Chain Tool

UAMMI is building a robust supply chain tool. This project is a unique effort to map the entire advanced materials supply chain in Utah. When completed, this tool will:

  • Identify gaps in the supply chain.
  • Increase contract opportunities for Utah manufacturers (both in defense and commercial sector)
  • Extend the personal relationship level among professionals and enhance knowledge sharing.
  • Expanded the capacity of Utah companies and further integrate businesses.
  • UAMMI is the joint effort of industry, government, military and academic leaders, who are committed to strengthening the supply chain and ecosystem that supports this vital industry in Utah.

To understand and improve the carbon composites ecosystem, UAMMI, through the University of Utah, received a grant from the Department of Defense- Office of Economic Adjustment to undertake a project to map Utah’s carbon composites supply chain. This mapping also includes assessing workforce development and job training as well. This project, which is currently underway, will enable stabilization of the ecosystem and prepare the industry for future growth and further diversification resulting in a stronger and more resilient supply chain that will serve as a significant contributor to Utah’s overall economy.
